Making candles
One of the Christmas presents I suggested the kids make for family was candles made from old crayons. We had a very large box of crayons no one ever used, so the kids helped me peel them.
They took turns picking the color to do. We quickly discovered that we couldn't clean the pot between batches so we needed to do the lightest batches first. We added parowax to each color to help bulk it up, and possibly to improve it's meltability.
The kids really enjoyed helping to shake the pan so that the colors of the different versions of, say, green, got mixed together.
